Why You Keep Worrying About Things You Cannot Change

If worry keeps pulling you toward problems you can't solve, the issue isn't weak willpower — it's a missing sorting skill. Here's how to build it.

The worry isn't the problem — the aim is

You already know, logically, that worrying about something outside your control won't move it. You've told yourself this. It hasn't helped much. That gap between knowing and stopping is worth examining, because it usually means the problem isn't your willpower or your anxiety level — it's that no one gave you a reliable method for telling the difference between a problem that's yours to act on and one that genuinely isn't.

Worry is effort looking for a target. When it latches onto something immovable, it isn't a character flaw — it's misdirection.

What the sorting actually involves

Distinguishing what you can act on from what you can't isn't a one-time decision. It's a small, repeatable question you learn to ask before you spend yourself on a problem: Is there a specific action available to me right now, or am I circling something I was never able to steer?

Notice that this question doesn't ask you to stop caring. It asks you to locate where your care can actually land.

When the answer is no action is available, the move isn't to feel nothing — it's to let your attention return to ground. Not suppressing the feeling, but not feeding it either.

Starting small

Pick one recurring worry this week. Ask the sorting question honestly. If an action exists, write it down and do it or schedule it. If no action exists, name that clearly to yourself — out loud if it helps. That naming is not defeat. It is the beginning of spending your energy where it can actually do something.

Equanimity isn't the absence of concern. It's concern that knows where to go.
