When Someone Else's Choice Is Consuming You
Stuck replaying what someone else decided? Learn why it happens and how to redirect your energy toward what's actually yours to act on.
You Keep Running the Same Loop
They said what they said. They chose what they chose. And yet here you are, hours later, still turning it over — wondering if you could have changed it, whether you said the right thing, what it means about you.
This isn't a character flaw. It's what happens when real care has nowhere useful to land.
The Actual Problem Isn't That You Care
Caring about someone else's decision makes sense. Their choices affect you, and that matters. But there's a point where engagement tips into consumption — where you're no longer thinking about something, you're being run by it.
That shift usually happens because no one taught you to ask a specific question: Is there anything here that is actually mine to act on?
Not "can I influence this person" or "can I make it turn out differently" — but genuinely yours, right now, in the space where your choices live.
Sometimes the answer is yes: a conversation you haven't had, a boundary you haven't named, a decision of your own you've been avoiding. That's worth your attention.
More often, the honest answer is no. Their decision was theirs. And staying in the loop doesn't give you more influence — it just keeps you spending yourself on something that was never yours to command.
The Practice
When you notice the loop starting, pause and ask: What, if anything, is mine to do here?
If something comes up — do it, or decide when you will. If nothing comes up, that's information. You're not giving up by releasing it. You're being accurate about where your effort can actually go.
This is a skill, not a switch. It gets more reliable with practice.
